The Riverside Historical Museum proudly presents its 2010 photo wall calendar, featuring 13 stunning images of the Arcade Building, the first progenitor of the modern suburban shopping center. The 2010 calendar highlights the beauty and functionality of this magnificent structure which has been a central part of Riverside’s rich history for over 137 years. Designed in 1871 and completed in 1872 the “Riverside Stores Block” as it was then called, was a part of the overall plan of Riverside to provide many of the modern conveniences city dwellers were used to at that time.
The Arcade Building is widely held to be the first of its kind, the precursor to the modern suburban shopping center. It is a multiple store development, built to provide a variety of goods and services, which offered one-stop shopping to the residents of the first transit oriented suburban planned community. The architect is Frederick Withers, who was recruited from England by Andrew Jackson Downing to work in his combined landscape and architectural practice with Calvert Vaux. It was Vaux who developed the idea of romantic, curvilinear roads as seen in the Olmsted, Vaux & Co. original plan for Riverside.
This beautiful calendar measures 11.00″ x 8.50″ (11.00″ x 17.00″ when hung) and is printed on 100lb paper with aqueous coating for longevity. You can see the calendar and other displays at the Riverside Museum between 10:00 and 2:00 on Saturdays. We are located at the corner of Forest Avenue and Longcommon Road next to the Water Tower. The price is $18.00 each. The 2010 Riverside Museum Calendar is also on sale at the Riverside Village Offices at 27 Riverside Road, and the Riverside Public Library at 1 Burling Road, Riverside, Illinois.
