The RHC invites photographers to enter its 2008 Photography Competition. You must read the following rules, terms and conditions before submitting any photos!

The Riverside Museum 2008 Digital Photography Competition (the “Contest”) is open to ALL photographers at least 16 years of age, except employees of the Riverside Museum, Riverside Historical Commission and the Village of Riverside and the immediate families of such employees. The contest is open to all participants regardless of residence or citizenship, so long as the laws of their jurisdiction allow participation.

Photos containing identifiable people must also be accompanied by a model release form. Model releases are the responsibility of the entrant and must be available in the event the photo is a winner.

YOUR RIGHTS: You will retain all rights to any photograph you submit — including ownership if applicable — other than those rights licensed in the next sentence. By entering the contest, you hereby grant to the RHC (i) a nonexclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, publicly display and publicly perform the photographs you submit to the RHC, and (ii) the right to use your name, city, state and country of residence in promotions and other publications.

WHAT TO ENTER: We are looking for striking digital images of the beauty of Riverside, be it the beautiful parks, elegant streetscapes, classic or modern architecture or natural beauty of the Des Plaines river.

All photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. Photos that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, adjustments to color and contrast, etc.) will be disqualified.

CATEGORIES: Images may be submitted in one of two categories. Photographers may enter all entries in a single category, or they may select different categories so long as each photo is entered into only one category. Judges reserve the right to move images from one category to the other based on eligibility.

All photos must be in color and taken in Riverside, Illinois within the last three years. The photo subject must be relevant to and show the unique historic character of Riverside, Illinois in one of the following contest categories:

  • Riverside Landmark Structures (except Water Tower) – we are trying to illustrate as many different and unique buildings, structures, and houses as possible on our website. Feel free to pick up a list of historic local landmarks at the museum for ideas.
  • Riverside Landscape and Parks – Riverside is “Riverside” because of generous amounts of beautiful, pastoral parks in our community. It is a National Historic Landmark because of its landscape design. The RHC is looking for images that demonstrate the beauty and privileges of living in the unique design created by Frederick Law Olmsted’s vision.

ELIGIBILITY AND JUDGING: To ensure eligibility for the contest, entries must have a resolution of 5 million pixels or greater (5 megapixels). Resolution can be calculated by multiplying the pixel width of the image with the pixel height. For example, a photograph taken with a 5 megapixel camera set for the highest resolution and best quality produces images that are 2584 pixels by 1936 pixels, which are acceptable under the rules (2584 x 1936 = 5 million). Images that do not meet this standard may or may not be judged at the judging panel’s sole discretion.

Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant us a license (see “Your Rights” above). You must be able to disclose when and where the photo appeared previously to the RHC upon request.

Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit. The judges are a panel of RHC board and staff members familiar with photography and responsible for selecting images for various RHC printed and online marketing and membership materials.

The RHC shall determine winner eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the judges are final.
